Sustainable Community Development in the Northern regions of Azerbaijan

PROJECT AREA: Davachi, Siyazan, Khachmaz 

PROJECT DURATION: April’ 2003- March’ 2004 (1st and 2nd stages)

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:
The project implemented in 3 stages:
  • The first phase - Community Mobilization:
    Analyses, selection of communities, round tables, formation of Community Action Teams, problem assessment (1st and 4th months).

  • The second phase - Trainings:
    Sustainable development of communities, vocational capacity building, implementation of micro-projects, business and entrepreneurship training (5th-12th months).

  • The third phase - Economic Opportunities Extension (round tables/business training):
    Providing loans through communities, and their circulation (8th-24th months)

GOAL: 
To identify, mobilize and develop communities, to develop employment and entrepreneurship opportunities of the population through community approach 

OBJECTIVES:

  • Community Mobilization;
  • Vocational Capacity Building, Apprenticeship;
  • Economic Opportunities Extension.

ACHIEVEMENTS: (for the 1st and 2nd phases)

  • Number of total beneficiaries comprises 10.831 people: women – 5.907 people (55%) and men – 4.924 people (45%);

  • 27 communities have been mobilized and 28 micro-projects have been implemented;

  • 1.552 people developed their capacity through attending 143 community development trainings;

  • 1.768 community members participated in the round tables, and increased their capacity on joint discussion, finding out priorities and the ways of their solution;

  • One problem identified by the community was solved in each of the 17 communities;

  • 25 people were provided with the temporary job during implementation of the micro-projects;

  • 40 youth were involved in the trainings in order to develop their vocational and business skills;

  • 18 craftsmen got the opportunity of making the additional income through teaching the youth vocational skills, and developed their business and vocational skills.
