“Support to Development of Communities in Sumgait” pilot project
DONOR: BP Exploration (Caspian Sea) Ltd.
LOCATION: Jabrayil secondary school #4 of Sumgait, Gaygi (Lachin region Jijimli rural secondary school) and Sema (47th district of Sumgait city)
DURATION: November’ 2002 - May’ 2003
OUTCOMES & ACHIEVEMENTS:

One additional schoolroom constructed and provided with furniture and equipment in each of two communities;
-
Schoolchildren’s attendance increased by 5-7%, education circumstances for 20-25 schoolchildren improved;
-
Parents’ initiative increased, parents’ interest towards the school and better education of their children, as well as the parents’ role in the solution of school’s problems increased;
-
8 round tables on community development were conducted. Project budget, community contribution, community members’ direct participation in the project were discussed;
-
9 entrepreneurs gained an opportunity to extend their businesses, their monthly income increased by 10% (50.000-80.000 AzM);
-
Awareness of 1000 members of one community about BP/Azerbaijan’s activity was raised.
