Improvement of potable
water provision of communities along BTC and SCP
The
project launched in November’ 2006 under the financial support of Baku-Tbilis-Ceyhan
(BTC Co.) and South Caucasus Pipeline Company Limited (SCP Co.).
The project is being implemented in the communities along BTC pipeline
targeted under Community Investment Program which injure mostly from lack
of potable water.
The Project Goals are:

Provide of community developed and managed water purification facilities
to 6 communities along BTC/SCP (Kurdamir – Sigirli, Karrar Rural, Karrar
Settlement, Ujar – Bargushad, Gulabend, Agdash – Orta Leki), using
locally available resources;

To
create management structures for each facility in the form of
Community-Municipality owned LLCs to effectively and transparently
manage water quality and revenues.
The
following activities are planned to be implemented:

Raising community awareness;
-
Developing organizational and institutional capacities of the
communities;

Improvement of access to safe water;
-
Economic Opportunities Expansion.
Community
Development Activity in Azerbaijan
USAID
has granted CHF in order to implement the 5 years project “Community
Development Activity in Azerbaijan”.
Umid HSSC began the implementation of “Community Development Activity in
Azerbaijan” program as local partner of CHF International in this program.
The Program will be implemented in 3 regions (north-east, north-west and
south).
Umid HSSC will implement community development activities in north-east
region within this project.
Umid intends the implementation of the following activities for supporting
community mobilization and local economic projects in north-east region:

Care and support to asylum seekers/refugees
Donor: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
Project goal: Vocational capacity building of asylum-seekers in
Azerbaijan through apprenticeship method, and providing them with non-food
relief items
A 3 day charity campaign was arranged in Women and Youths Center in
November to render free of charge barber, cosmetology and dress-making
services. 32 women benefited from the services provided by the
apprenticeship course graduates who included 4 hair-dressers, 4
cosmetologists, 3 dress-makers.
The campaign assisted in introducing the Apprenticeship course graduates
to the communities, practicing the knowledge and skills they achieved, and
think over charity and tolerance.
13 persons getting vocational skills were delivered business trainings on
following subjects:
BTC/SCP Community
Investment Program
Donor: Save the Children
Project goal: Support to capacity development of Community Groups,
management of community projects and support to the solution of
social-economic problems of the communities
Save the Children and Umid HSSC continue their cooperation in sustainable
community development under BTC\SCP Community Investment Program (CIP).
The Technical Assistance Team consisting of employees of Save the Children
and Umid HSSC were formed in order to make need assessment of Community
Groups and Municipalities on technical support. This team conducted
assessment of Municipalities and 6 Star Community Groups which are
considered the best Community Groups using Organizational Assessment Tool.
The goal of Organizational Assessment Tool is to identify and prioritize
training and Technical needs of each community based organization and
investigate gender factor at CBOs.
Selected 6 Star Community Groups and Municipalities:

Nematabad Community & Municipality of Yevlakh region

Eyvazlilar Community and Municipality of Goranboy region

Yukahri Agasibeyli Community and Municipality of Samukh region

Dallar Dashbulag Community and Municipality of Shamkir region
-
Khatinli Community and Municipality of Tovuz region
-
Saloglu Community and Municipality of Agstafa region.

Members of Star Community Groups and Municipalities were delivered
trainings on the subjects: Project Management, Report Writing, Financial
Management, Organization Management and Planning, Network and partnership,
Lobbying, Fundraising and Presentation skills.
Besides, 148 adolescents willing to get vocational skills applied to the
center in target area. According to the selection criteria only 30 persons
(19 girls, 11 boys) are getting vocational skills at present
(Hairdressing, carpenter, dressmaking, craftsman, welder, motor repairing,
barber, weaving.
Education for Development

Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
a) Improvement of education condition and increase of parental
initiative in IDP schools
A seminar was held to apply interactive training methods in 14 IDP
schools situated in Sumgait. The information on strategy and modern
training methods were given at the seminar.
16 English teachers participated at this seminar.
In November’ 2005, the pupils of Azerbaijan International School visited
Lachin Imanlar school and school # 40 of Fizuli region.
The goals of this visit were passing the useful experience of modern
education, creating the cooperation between the schools and establishing
relations between the children representing various nations.

B) Vocational capacity building of IDP youth through apprenticeship
method
37 IDP youths have got vocational skills according their wishes.
15 youths getting vocational skills were delivered business trainings in
order to help them to create their business.
Initial information on market research, SWOT analyses, preparing of
business plans, registration of tax payers and taxes. Also, the computer
courses were arranged to provide the youths with computer skills.
Detailed information was given to the youths on MS Windows, MS Word, MS
Excel programs.
Umid has realized a charity campaign at the Boarding school where
mentally and physically disabled children study.
14 graduates of the apprenticeship courses demonstrated their know-how
acquired in the vocational trainings, caused the joy of hundreds of the
students during 2 day campaign.
The campaign ended with a puppet-show for the students of Boarding
school and exhibition of their handicrafts
.
c) Logistical support to UNHCR assistance programs to refugee and
IDPs in Azerbaijan
In October’ 2005, Umid received humanitarian relief items sending to
UNHCR by International Lutheran World. The distribution plan for 2006
have been prepared and approved by the relevant department of Cabinet
Ministers of the Azerbaijan Republic. According to the distribution plan
it’s planned to distribute non-food humanitarian relief items to IDPs
and refugees settled in 17 regions by 13 organizations in 2206.
Effective Usage of
Energy and Improvement of Access to Alternative Energy Sources- Energy
Bus
Donor: BP, OSCE, International
Finance Corporation, Eurasia Foundation
Project goal: Raising community awareness on effective usage of
energy resources
The project is being implemented in 4 directions:

Education - 19 demonstrations were
arranged in Samukh and Shamkir regions.

Training - 54 students of 9th and
11th grades participated at the trainings on effective and safe usage of
energy resources, energy technologies, and insulation works
-
Instruction - instructions on right
insulation were given to a kindergarten and 2 schools. The doors and
windows have been insulated and sawdust heaters were presented them.

Consultation - 19 entrepreneurs were
provided with the consultations on installation of Micro HES, Biogas
installation, Solar system and sawdust heater.
Zykh Community
Development Initiative
Donor: Shah Deniz
Project goal: To support creative and sustainable initiatives
that strengthen community institutions, generate income, and create
socio-economic opportunities in surrounding area of Textile Complex
after Z.Tagiyev in Zykh Road, Khatai District of Baku.
Community Development
Conducting the trainings and consultations for increasing Community
Action Teams’ awareness on various topics and practice the knowledge
they acquired are proceeding. The trainings covered the topics on
ecology, health, projects management, developing sustainability plans
for projects, advocacy etc.
Support to Community Initiative
The activities in the range of supporting community initiatives,
computer and English language courses were arranged for developing
community capacities. 36 community members have successfully completed
the courses already. Extra speaking sessions were included to the
English language courses to improve speaking skills of the course
students.
A New Year Celebration was arranged in Culture Club named after Tagiyev
on the occasion of “The Solidarity Day of World Azers” and “New Year”
besides the community members, local entrepreneurs and authoritative
people also pasticapated at the arrangement of the celebrations.
320 children of 5-7 yaers old were the spectators of the celebration
which ended with “A Tale of Winter” performance and new-year
presentations.
This arrangament of celebrations was the evident sample of the
collaboration between community members and local entrepreneurs.
Development of infrastructure
The contracts on following the projects were signed with 4 Communities
in October-December’ 2005.

and setting of seats for inhabitants.
Apprenticeship Courses
The pupils of barber course organized the charity campaign in SOS
village on the eve of New year and “Day of Solidarity of Azerbaijanians”.
Pupils rendered the barber service to about 25 juveniles and mothers
taking care of them during the campaign.
At the moment 23 youth increase their vocational skills on hairdressing,
cosmetology, painter, and dressmaking courses.
Umid HSSC
celebrated its 8 years anniversary
Umid HSSC is an independent national NGO
working to help the marginalized segment of the population, in resolving
their basic needs, solving their social problems, improving the
education condition, developing communities, creating economic
opportunities for the people etc.
Umid launched its activity in Sumgait city in 1997, nowadays the areas
of Umid’s intervention increased to almost whole Azerbaijan.
Umid HSSC is very much thankful to its partners and employees for all
its successes.
