Education and
training- It's our vision of investment
Matching the skills of
masters and apprentices passes on skills from one generation to the next.
It's not a new idea, but it's something we should never under-value.
Through the efforts of our partner Umid in the area around the Zykh yard,
we're actively nourishing the desires of youth to learn by linking them
with local masters in fields of their choice.
Young men & women are showing considerable interest in learning
traditional trades including welding, hairdressing, dress making and car
repair, as well as popular new fields in mobile, telephone repair and PVC
window installation.
Over 100 apprentices will be linked with masters in the area around the
Shah Deniz project site by 2006. The six month part- time training
not only provides them with an introduction into the trade of their
interest, but teaches the importance of discipline, customer services &
the value of money. Masters also have the opportunity to link more closely
with the community, with the satisfaction of knowing that in some small
way, they are contributing to the building of the Azeri
Nation.
Forthcoming workshops with interested youth will focus on exploiting the
momentum the project is beginning to generate by exploring new trades and
areas for involvement in 2005.
